The School District of Rhinelander has created "a jewel in the northwoods". The Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom (CAVOC) is comprised of 160 acres with another 80 acres adjoining the property. The School Forest Environmental Education Center (SFEEC) includes the Rominsky Lodge, The Lu Berndt Active Learning Center, and the Northwoods Animal Museum. Our Kinder Forest is for our youngest learners and is located on the grounds near the SFEEC. The Challenge Ropes Course is nestled in the property with Long Lake bordering the east side. Walking, skiing and snowshoe trails meander throughout the property.
CAVOC is used to provide hands-on, outdoor learning experiences that help students acquire the awareness, knowledge, skills and commitment to become responsible stewards of their natural environment.
CAVOC is open to the public year round and provides fun for all seasons. Pets are not allowed on the CAVOC property.
The property was named the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom in the late 1970's. Mr. Vig was the Superintendent of Schools for many years in Rhinelander. He was well-known in the area for his "Wood Smoke" column in the local newspaper as well as his radio comments on nature topics.
